2006 Coach House Cabernet

In 2005 access to some extraordinary fruit from like minded growers, gave us the opportunity to make two 'new' wines during the 2006 vintage. One of these is a pure expression of perhaps the grandest, if not the most under rated red variety, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coach House came about quite simply from Peter's belief that great Cabernet had been and still could be produced in McLaren Vale, without being a Shiraz look-a-like - a belief born out by the region's recent world wide success with the variety.

This south east facing vineyard on sandy loam soil, produced just 4 tonnes of stunning fruit from 3 acres, without any shoot or bunch thinning. This is the only wine H A L i F A X produces which has significant new oak, 40% new Seguin Moreau barriques and hogsheads of varying forests but all medium or low toast. The remaining oak is 2nd and 3rd use barrels with some older barrels reserved for blending into Ad Lib.

Coach House Cabernet is an intriguing balance of elegance and power, beguiling aromas and flavours, and fabulous structure and length of flavour. While surprisingly drinkable now, we believe it will gain complexity and develop beautifully over many years.
